64th Annual

What happened 250 years ago this July 4th was way, way more radical than breaking up with a king to create a new nation. The Declaration of Independence revolutionized society by proclaiming all people were equal, that we even had rights! It changed our relationship with government from subjects to citizens. The Declaration of Independence inspired the best of American history, and even now suggests a way out of our current morass. 

Let us celebrate that!  Not just by paying homage to history, but by inspiring We The People of today to recognize our better angels, and to create together a more perfect Union. 

Join us as we celebrate with song, poetry, and thoughtful oratory a government of, by and for the people. We have gathered every year since 1962 to proclaim the Declaration of Independence and promote thoughtful citizenship and the common good. We are non-partisan; however, we don’t shy away from challenging ideas. We welcome members and candidates of all political parties. This is an occasion to celebrate our country which belongs to all of us. 

Stir The Pot Speaker: Terry Kyllo - Paths of Understanding

Our speaker this year is perfect for this moment. Terry Kyllo, Executive Director of Paths to Understanding: Gathering Neighbors, Growing Trust. A Lutheran Pastor, Terry is passionate about renewing civil society and democracy by helping communities build trust across deep divides. Located here in Washington State, Paths to Understanding participates in regional and national projects to build a world where everyone belongs and everyone can thrive. pathstounderstanding.org

Free Concert by Ryan Clavelle and Friends!

Everyone likes Ryan, a gifted pianist and singer who is warm, funny, soulful, genre-fluid (jazz/soul/blues/gospel/pop), and community-rooted here in Spokane. This will be a treat!  Ryan will play from Noon to 1:00 pm.  JazzinRy.com 

We gather in the cool shade of Finch Arboretum*

Bring your own picnic and chairs. Water will be available, but you may need your own cup. Restrooms will be open. Finch Arboretum Park prohibits dogs. You are welcome to forward this and invite your friends and family. However, please do not post on social media or send out on to a bulk email list.

The Westbrook family assisted by enthusiastic friends have organized this gathering since 1962.
